The Theory Test

PART 1: Multiple choice questions.

The multiple-choice section for car drivers consists of upto 50 questions. With each question is a list of potential answers. You need to select the correct answer or answers by touching the appropriate area on the computer screen. You will be given 57 minutes to complete the test. To pass you need to correctly answer 43 out of 50 questions, which is equivalent to 86%.

PART 2: Hazard perception test

This part of the test consists of 14 video clips, each clip lasts approximately one minute. There will be 15 hazards to find, at least one in each clip. However one clip will have two hazards. Each clip will start with a freeze frame at the start of the video and a countdown will start, once at zero the clip starts to play and you will be required to click the mouse each time you see a potential hazard. To let you know the program has registered your click, a red flag will appear on a grey band across the bottom of the screen. Although each clip contains several potential hazards only one that becomes a developing hazard will be scored upon i.e. if you as the driver have to react upon it by either changing direction or speed. The score you obtain will be dependant upon how quickly you react as the developing hazard materializes. The faster you act the higher the score. YOU MUST SCORE 44 OUT OF 75

The practical driving test.

When you have passed your theory test, you can apply for a practical test. The driving test lasts for approximately 40 mins, during the test you must demonstrate to the examiner that you can control the car in all situations and are aware of all other road users and the actions they can take. You will be asked to perform two manoeuvres and one in three candidates will be asked to perform an emergency stop. You will be asked to drive on varying types of road with speed limits from 20 mph to dual carriageways, which may have a 70mph speed limit. The examiner will mark your driving according to the following criteria:

DANGEROUS FAULTS - Faults which cause actual danger to other road users

SERIOUS FAULTS - Faults which could potentially cause danger to other road users

DRIVING FAULTS - Faults which do not constitute a danger to other road users.
